Getting a grip on back-to-school driving

It’s going to be chaos out there.

So, with the school year about to start for more than 50 million children, we thought it would be helpful to remind motorists of the many challenges of driving not typical during the summer.

It’s a sort of back-to-school driving primer to keep the kiddos and you safe.

We came up with 20 challenges as shown in the accompanying infographic – everything from getting a late start in the morning to cell phone calls and text messages to crowded and busy school zones.

U.S. families drive tens of billions of miles a year – that’s right, billion with a ‘b’ – to get their kids to and from school accounting for an estimated 10 percent to 14 percent of traffic, according to experts. An estimated 43 percent of children who reside less than a mile from school, a relatively easy distance for walking and bicycling if conditions are safe, still are driven, says the Safe Route Partnership organization.

And yet, more than 100 children are killed each year in car crashes in school zones, and more than 25,000 are injured, reported American Traffic Solutions of Tempe, AZ.

So, buckle up and read on – your kids’ (and your) back-to-school safety may depend on it.
