You make a life by what you give.
That sentiment was expressed by one Santander Consumer USA volunteer in Mesa, AZ, and the actions of more than 80 others who worked last week on a tiny home project at the SC campus.
Build us H.O.P.E of Mesa was the beneficiary of the group’s efforts as part of the company’s Volunteer Paid Time Off (VPTO) program that allows each full-time associate to contribute 16 hours to organizations in the communities where they work.
Santander Associates have worked nearly 20,000 volunteer hours so far this year.
SC associates were happy to contribute to Build us H.O.P.E.
“The volunteers did a great job and all cooperated and worked solidly together,” said SC’s Adam F. “Despite the clouds, wind and a few drizzles, all were able to overcome the challenges.”
The group was asked to build and paint hanging pallet gardens for tiny houses in the H.O.P.E. program.
The volunteers, who also had the opportunity to tour a tiny house onsite, learned there that the Santander Foundation had contributed $100,000 toward building three structures and the planters that will be used for 10 homes in the community.
The organization is a long-term, permanent, community-based housing program that provides support services to the homeless, disabled and other impaired residents.

“This event was a very profound experience as we were able to interact with associates from different departments [and demonstrate] how great organizations exist for causes like this,” said volunteer Rolando A., who helped build, finish and paid planters during his shift. “I felt very motivated and would like to continue … making a difference for the communities in need.”
Jessica L., another SC volunteer, also appreciated the opportunity to serve while working with an associate from a different department to “build a special and unique item for a great cause.”
SC’s Victoria V. summed up the Build us H.O.P.E. tiny house experience this way: “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give. Everyone worked together to make as many hanging pallet gardens as we could.”
